SOS

Do something nice for yourself today. Find some quiet, sit in stillness, breathe. Put your problems on pause. You deserve a break.

Scenes all over the world right now, remind us of movies we saw about the apocalypse, scenes from movies like I am Legend, empty streets resemble images from The Walking Dead. It is the third month of 2020 and the world is seemingly coming to an end. There’s a lot of hysteria, words like pandemic are all over our screens, staying at home is a safer choice, schools  and universities are being closed, people are working from home or are being let go, there’s no such thing as travelling in peace as there are some countries you can’t get into and other countries where it is advised not to get out of. Toilet paper fights and the endless search of disinfection gels and sprays are the norm these days.

Sitting on my porch in Ghana while writing this, with the birds chirping, palm trees swaying and honking cars in the distance, there’s a radio blasting music and news somewhere along the road and children playing in one of the neighboring houses. Everything seems normal but it is not, there’s fear in the air, a state of emergency with the head of state trying his possible best to contain the possible damage that could be done.

Leave it up to me to choose this exact time to be on holidays right? It is my last week and COVID-19 has cut the fun short yet still giving me more time to spend with my family and more time to spend with my thoughts. Forcefully fueling my creativity.

Still, the uncertainty can be more than frustrating, questions like the risk of being at three airports when going back to Germany, what it will be like once I get back, what life looks like 3000 miles from here vs what I have been seeing on TV and on the Internet. Remaining positive in these times is something that helps us to stay afloat when everything around us seems to be drowning.

Sos. Save our souls but my sos stands for self-love over self-harm.

It is now of utmost necessity that we spend this time taking care of ourselves in every way possible. Using this time not being occupied with the negative but instead doing something positive by reaching out to those in need, the elderly, those with chronic diseases, pregnant women that may not have anyone doing their chores for them. Actual helping hands and not just virtual ones.

Take your vitamins by eating fruits and vegetables, mix in a smoothie here and there, try and relax and put your mind at ease, stay cozied up and prayed up. Stay hydrated and soak in whatever sun you can get because we all know vitamin D is good for the soul.

Stay safe beautiful people!

Love,

Maame
