Good Days

Good Days living in my mind. Tell me I'm not my fears, my limitations.

It’s been a while, it’s been a minute.

And it feels good to be journaling out in the open again. I hope the year has been treating you well so far. Of course everyone has their own version of what being treated well looks and feels like. For some it is receiving a lot, for some it is in the small things, either way, I hope 2021 didn’t start off for you as 2020’s evil identical twin brother, as some depicted it to be. 2021 started off as beautiful as it could for me, I had a baby with my baby and she is perfection (and I’m not being biased because I am her mother, she is perfection.) More on that to come.

January went by as quickly as it could, it was in a hurry to leave and get the f out of here. And now, here we are in February. The month of love for some, the month of black history for others. The month that comes with the toughest weather conditions for some (is it snowing where you are, or is the cold just following me around like I asked it to?) And the month that screams spring is around the corner for others. But back to black history. It should be celebrated all year long. Quoting Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston on their infamous interview: We should have a Black History YEAR. Because why not?!

Black people, have been tested and tried from time to time, we have found strength when we were brought down to our knees, we have prevailed and endured and continue to rise above it all. Whatever we are doing now, is shaping the history that will be told tomorrow. And that is something that should be put into consideration in everything we do. No pressure.

Seeing many black businesses thrive over the past year has been a sight to behold. Seeing black people step into greatness even more so. Whether it was a blog, a podcast, a YouTube channel, an informative and educative instagram page, a business, pursuing education, going for that job,  starting a family, pursuing our goals and dreams one day at a time, ticking off the to do list for the day. Whatever it was that meant elevation for each and everyone of you, however big or small, just know you did good! (Currently doing the slow clap and standing ovation combo that you see in movies).  It gave me hope that things are possible, that the glass ceiling is nothing but  an illusion placed there to hold us down and that the sky - hell, the galaxy is the limit.

It always seems impossible, until it is done.

Inspiring ourselves is the number one goal, because most of the times we are our biggest critics, speaking out of experience here. Whatever it is that you can do, whatever work it is that you want to put out, whatever content it is that you want to create, the course that you want to do but feel too “old” to do, the job you have been wanting to apply for, the YouTube channel that has been set to private hiding all the beautiful content, the song that you have been wanting to release, the art that you think is not good enough for others to see, the business plan that has been collecting dust instead of dollars, just do it. I have to admit that I was scared that I wouldn't be able to pursue certain things once I became a mother, but why put a limit on something that is limitless? Who says that things can't be done, that greatness can't be achieved? Silence that inner voice that always seems to pop up when we are feeling fearless and ready to take on the world. Use this month as a stepping stone to rise. No matter how big or small the step. Good days are coming or might even already be here, it is our attitude and our willingness to embrace and see it, that will determine how good they will be.

Love,

Maame
